Lithium Batteries in Air Cargo

A Need to Know Webinar Series

The first "CNS Need to Know" webinar focusing on lithium batteries issues in air cargo was an overwhelming success. The session consisted of industry subject matter experts sharing their knowledge and expertise on various topics related to lithium batteries in air cargo.

The transportation of lithium batteries remains a hot topic and safety concerns remain high on the cargo agenda. Despite requirements in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and 49 CFR, the industry needs to remain vigilant as undeclared and therefore non-compliant dangerous goods shipments continue to find their way into supply chains. The technology of lithium batteries is ever-evolving with manufacturers coming up with smaller and more powerful versions, that also address safety concerns. The growth of eCommerce is also showing an increase in lithium batteries, in which online sellers utilize international air cargo and airmail to get their products to their customers. However, are the efforts suffice in raising awareness on the restrictions of dangerous goods to all parties involved in the process, to ensure they do not enter the cargo and mail streams?

The webinar explained the roles and responsibilities of the different entities in the supply chain in the classification, packing, acceptance and handling of lithium batteries and equipment packed with or containing lithium batteries. Our program also touched on key initiatives under consideration at the United Nations Subcommittee to develop a hazard-based classification system for lithium batteries as well as US DOT initiatives with the industry.

Speakers:

  • Duane Pfund, Director International Standards, US DOT, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)
  • David Brennan, Assistant Director Cargo Safety and Standards, IATA
