1st Quarter 2010 Cargo e-Chartbook

The turn of the year saw a strong upturn in cargo volumes and yields.

Key points for Q1:

  • Volumes and yields have risen strongly out of Asia but are relatively soft on some other markets - a pattern that may persist for some time.
  • Capacity has been cut with 160 freighters taken out of service and load factors have been pulled back up to pre- 9/11 levels.
  • Freight capacity on passenger aircraft has risen and AFTKs have partly been cut by reducing aircraft utilization 7%.
  • Fuel costs have gone up with markets implying a rise in jet kerosene prices from $85/b to $90/b by year end.
  • World trade upturn evident to lesser extent in container shipping and ocean rates now rising in line with air freight rates.
  • Signs that cargo losses levelled out in 2009Q3 with at least one Asian airline reporting a return to profit in Q4.
  • Heads of cargo report that they are more confident in the outlook, though risks around the recovery in Europe and N America remain.
